Unit 1; Type of Production, Finance

Type of Production:

Mission Impossible Rogue Nation is a 2015 action film about proving the existence of the antagonist organisation. It was released in 2015 between 25th July and 8th September worldwide depending on the country. It was released on July 31st in the United States. The production type is a Hollywood film. How we know it is a Hollywood film production is to start with, the budget. The budget was USD$150 million which although is quite low for a film of this standing, is quite large in contrast to other action films (though CGI heavy films tend to have a higher budget like Avatar or Avengers Infinity War). Another feature that tells us this is a Hollywood production is star power/appeal. Names such as Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin and Jeremy Renner are expensive actors for in front of the camera while Christopher McQuarrie, J. J. Abrams and Joe Kraemer are talent behind the camera. These are all expensive, well known talent in Hollywood which is common for a big budget film production. The distributor is Paramount Pictures which is one of the major film studios in Hollywood. They are responsible for big budget films such as the Transformers franchise. J. J. Abrams production company Bad Robot produced this film which is responsible for Lost, Alias and Westworld. More indication that  this is a Hollywood production is that it was released in Dolby Vision (which was a first for Paramount) and released in both regular and IMAX. A way we know it is this type of production is that it follows the conventions of an action film. These conventions include editing the action to a fast pace to keep the audience engaged, varying degrees of fantasy violence depending on the target market, sound effects such as explosions, intense music, exaggerated sounds like footsteps, the setting usually takes place in one or more locations, the lighting is often bright and exciting or dark and gloomy depending on the scene. There is also a main protagonist and antagonist who fight throughout.

Finance:

This is a large scale action movie with a Hollywood film production which means the budget would be quite high. It was USD$150 million and made over USD$682.7 million at the box office upon release. Costs that would be involved in this production include booking of venues or shutting down of locations, actor salaries, equipment, transportation hire, marketing and props/materials.

Facility/Venue Hiring

This is when the film production requests to use a certain location to film a certain scene for their film. They can often request to film in a studio, a real world location or a combination of both. With Mission Impossible Rogue Nation, the crew opted to use as much real world locations as possible. One such location was the RAF Wittering near Stamford and Peterborough. This location was used to film the opening plane scene. The production crew had the time limit of 48 hours to film this. The filmed it 8 times before reaching the desired shot.

Equipment

Equipment is what the film crew need to either buy or hire in order to shoot the film. This could include, boom mics, cameras, lights, editing software, cranes, dolly tracks, green/blue screen, motion capture and wind machines. Rogue Nation would have had to use most if not all of this equipment to enhance their film.

Props/Materials

Props and materials are costumes or objects that the actors wear, use, have on them or interact with. Often, some of these can be created in CGI with a placeholder such as in Ted (2012), eyes and a stick was used for the CGI bear to work with. Costume and props are also often used as symbols for a character such as a screwdriver in Doctor Who or Freddy’s claw in A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Actor/crew salaries

This is the money that goes towards the actors and crew for taking part in the making of the film. The salary for each actor varies hugely depending on the star power and  their previous work. Tom Cruise has established himself as being able to bring mass amounts of audiences and lots of cash to Hollywood thus he is more valuable and costs more. The rest of the filming and editing crew need to also be paid as well. The payment varies depending on their role and duration on set such as an extra getting paid only for a few days over a star working for the whole duration.

Transportation

The transportation expenses mean’s getting actors and crew to and from locations safety. This could be via car, or plane. The actors and directors tend to travel with security to ensure they have some level of protection especially when filming in an area or travelling down a route where the public can easily access.
